Glenbard to host Literacy Development in Dual Language Learners program

The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present Instructional Strategies and Literacy Development in Dual Language Learners with professor Brenda Gorman on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

This presentation is designed to cultivate educators' and parents' knowledge and skill needed to support students who are dual-language learners. We will discuss up-to-date information about strategies designed for dual-language learners that will help educators serve dual-language learners and empower parents to support their children's academic success.

Participants will learn: key points they can share to help educate families about dual-language acquisition in children with special needs; a strategy they can teach parents, regardless of parents' literacy levels, to help them foster literacy development; and general strategies for enhancing dual-language learners' achievement of state standards.

Gorman is an associate professor and graduate program director at Elmhurst College, where she is investigating language and literacy assessment and intervention in bilinguals and co-developing a dual-language language and literacy curriculum for preschoolers. Previously, she was a bilingual speech-language pathologist, serving diverse caseloads for public school districts and early intervention agencies before entering academia. She previously co-directed Reading Acquisition for Spanish Speakers Program and an Early Reading First project.

This program will be presented at noon Jan. 20 in the auditorium at Glenbard South High School, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn. CPDUs and CEU's are available for education professionals.

GPS is generously sponsored by the Cebrin Goodman Center, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, DuPage Medical Group, Emmy Gaffey Foundation and Trust Company of Illinois.
