Junior Shawn Donley, of Wauconda, asks to take a selfie with Archbishop Blase Cupich as he toured Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein. Cupich stopped in classrooms, ate lunch with students and talked with teachers and employees during the hour-long visit. I was surprising when a young high school student was bold enough to ask the Archbishop to take a selfie with him. But to his credit, he was personable enough to smile with the students and to take it in stride. It was a very enlightening moment about the personality of the new Archbishop.   Decades of competition can be seen etched into the hardwood floor of the St. Edward Central Catholic High School gymnasium in Elgin. The only gym at the private school is a unique throwback to old school traditions, compared to so many modern local high schools that may have three or more gymnasiums and fieldhouses. The cramped room is dominated by steep bleachers on massive cement steps on the sides of the floor, a stage and a wall butt up to each baseline and heavy steel beams and large steel lights hang over the playing surface. The sounds of the game, referees whistles, scoreboard horns, announcers calls and cheering crowds all reverberate into a jumbled mass of noise during competitions. But the one thing that always gets my attention is the old floor. The lights reflect the uneven, pockmarked surface, and bring to mind the generations that have played there.
