I was photographing a boys high school basketball game recently when this tiny sticker caught my eye. It was staring at me as students walked between myself and the game action, instead of walking behind me on their way to the bleachers. But the little smile made my day and reminded me to stay positive even when I'm getting walked on. I don't really know the story behind this giant American flag that adorns the side of a barn at the corner of Rand and West Old Rand Roads in Wauconda. It looks like a fairly recent paint job, but the farm that the barn sits on appears to be abandoned. You can't miss it while traveling north on Rand just before getting into town. This view is from West Old Rand Road. This photo was originally published in the Perspective column in the print edition of the Daily Herald.

Ranger Alex Donat stirs the small fire Thursday as the crew continues to clear the area. More than two acres of the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles is being cleared of invasive and non-native plants such as Buckthorn. The Kane County Forest Preserve crew has spent the better part of the week battling the overgrown area on the southeast side of the road leading to the lower area of the St. Charles preserve. Ranger Donat said that the lack of visibility due to the overgrown non-native plants in the area was a safety issue for drivers.
