DCHD tests water for well owners

DUPAGE COUNTY—The DuPage County Health Department reminds county residents with private wells to get their well water tested annually to protect their families and friends. The Health Department recently refurbished its water testing lab which analyzes well water samples for safety and wastewater samples for the proper operation of private septic systems.

There are approximately 18,000 private wells in DuPage County. An annual test is recommended or whenever work is done on the well or on your plumbing, such as hot water tank replacement.

The Health Department tests well water for $35. The test covers basic coliform bacteria and nitrate screening. The Health Department has experienced increases in water testing this year due to well water testing following the April flooding and increases in the number of homes with private wells being sold in unincorporated areas.

Residents may stop at any of the Health Department's public health centers in Addison, Lombard, Westmont or Wheaton to pick up well water testing supplies and instructions, as well as drop off their samples. This is the only way that well water will be accepted for testing. Testing results are usually known within 72 hours. Corrective actions are suggested if contamination problems are detected.
