A Hover Fly rests atop a salvia plant. May and June are great months to look at flowers and by just observing the flowers, you might not notice these small flies, which feed on nectar and pollen. But, by using a macro lens and being patient, I was able to move in and get a close look at the colorful insect.

A male rose-breasted grosbeak really shows its colors inflight between bird feeders in Lori Sweenys backyard in Mundelein on May 4. If you want to capture the true color in outdoor nature photography, set your cameras white-balance to sun or cloud. Automatic white-balance will neutralize the beautiful colors. To freeze action, set your scene selection to sports. I am teaching How to take Interesting Photographs at the Buffalo Grove Park District on June 20 at 7 p.m.

Abby Evans, 10, of St. Charles plays at Moore Parks water park in Geneva on Thursday. Abbys been coming to the park with her mother since she was very little, and still enjoys visiting it. Several groups of children were at the park on the warm day, even though the water was a bit cold. They just took breaks to warm up and headed right back in to frolic in the sprinklers.

All three are cancer survivors. Turner is a four-year breast cancer survivor, Matthew beat a rare form of brain cancer and Cwik is a seven-year breast cancer survivor. Matthew was adopted by the ECC mens basketball team in January.
