Ferrante, Viator claim tourney win at Freeport
St. Viator’s Andrew Ferrante struck out eight in 6 innings to help St. Viator get off to a winning start in tournament play Friday in Freeport as the Lions earned a 4-3 victory over Stillman Valley.
Joe Rossi had 2 of the Lions’ 3 hits and also stole 2 bases, and Roy Pettingill doubled.
St. Viator (3-3) is scheduled for two more games in the tournament on Saturday.
Maine West 5, Prospect 0: Senior Cory Winiecki kept Prospect’s bats under control as the Warriors earned a shutout victory in nonconference play in Mt. Prospect.
Junior shortstop Brett Straessle drove in 2 runs for Maine West, which plated 2 runs in the third innning and 3 in the fifth.
The Warriors had 8 hits, all singles, and benefitted from 6 Prospect errors.
Winiecki threw 55 of his 97 pitches for strikes.
Alan Backes suffered the loss for the Knights.
Elk Grove 4, Wheaton Warrenville South 1: Elk Grove starter Alex Tinkoff allowed the visiting Tigers 7 hits and 1 run in his 6-inning stint in a nonconference victory.
Tinkoff struck out four and allowed 1 extra-base hit, a double to Justin Kelly. David Camacho pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Grens.
Michael Anciulis had 3 hits, and Peter Arbov was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 runs scored for the Grens.
Barrington 5, Vernon Hills 3: Scott Nelson earned the victory and also doubled as host Barrington rallied from behind with a 1-run fifth and a 4-run sixth to win in nonconference action.
Nelson threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of the 27 batters he faced, and Bennett Hillestead got the save for the Broncos.
Dundee-Crown 3, Conant 2: The host Chargers scored all their runs in the first inning, then limited Conant to 3 hits in nonconference play. Kevin Schimel suffered the loss.
Wheeling 12, Maine East 1 (5): The host Wildcats got doubles from Nick Ricciardi and David Shapiro and a triple from Brenden Spillane as part of a 12-hit attack in a 5-inning nonconference win.
Sophomore Nathan Cooney earned the victory as Maine East had 4 hits.
Christian Liberty 11, Chicago Hope 0 (6): Dan Glad tossed 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts and also homered to help the Chargers to a one-sided victory. David Colbert also tripled in Christian Liberty’s 9-hit output.
