A large inflatable shamrock outside a Lisle bar combined with the ominous clouds and the bright late afternoon sun caught my eye. I used a wide angle lens and a low vantage point to frame the shamrock in the sky without having any buildings in the background.

Ah the rule of thirds, my old friend. Here I had a nice scene of a bald eagle finding a place to sit in a tree with nothing else to frame it with on three sides. So I framed the eagle up on the right lower third while shooting and voila, a largely empty frame is explained away using one of the first rules of composition. Genius or cop-out? Eighth-grade students in the AVID program at Abbott Middle School in Elgin had a chance to try mberry Wednesday, a tablet made from the miracle berry that melts in your mouth and makes normally sour foods taste sweet. They first tried lemon before taking the pill, which Andrea Juarez, left, didnt enjoy. After taking the pill, David Tayleor (left center), tried grapefruit without much success, and Jack Slotowski didnt enjoy his pickle, but Deavian Kimbrough thouroghly enjoyed the enhanced sweetness of her orange. The AVID program is a college readiness system that helps kids develop their study skills and critical thinking.

Sister Johanna Murphy receives a yellow rose from student Abby Phelan, 12, of Geneva, after singing When Irish Eyes are Smiling for her at her 100th birthday celebration at St. Peters Catholic Church in Geneva. The song was the most popular of her birth year. Students presented the highlights and news for each decade of her life, and then gave her a rose after each decade, which in turn made a flower bouquet.

Around 240 ping-pong balls were filled with items like seeds, marshmallows and gummy bears. The PongSat is sponsored by JP Aerospace of Rancho Cordova, California and will launch the balls to the outer reaches of earths atmosphere via a rocket or hot air balloon in April. When they return to earth, Fremont students will see what happened to the items.
