The State Board of Education named 26 Northwest suburban elementary schools to the Illinois Honor Roll on Monday — half of them from one district alone.
School districts receiving the honor included Wheeling Township District 21, Arlington Heights District 25, River Trails District 26, Schaumburg Township District 54, Mount Prospect District 57, Elk Grove Township District 59 and Des Plaines District 62.
District 54 alone has 13 schools on the list of 454 statewide to receive the Academic Excellence Award for sustaining high performance levels on state assessments for at least three years. The district also was one of only 10 in Illinois to win the award at more than 10 of its schools this year. There are 27 schools in District 54.
To win the award, each school had to have made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2011 and 2012 and had 90 percent of its students meet or exceed state standards in reading and mathematics for the three most recent school years.
Also earning the award were Bartlett, Prarieview and Centennial elementary schools in Bartlett.
The other six Northwest suburban districts named were honored at an afternoon ceremony Monday attended by State Superintendent ChristopherKoch at John Jay Elementary School in Mount Prospect — one of only three Illinois schools to win the Academic Improvement Award four times.
