Elgin notches 3rd win of season
Melanie Berg led a balanced scoring attack with 9 points Tuesday night as the Elgin girls basketball team beat Cornerstone Christian 35-23 in nonconference action at Chesbrough Field House.
The win put the Maroons’ record at 3-2 for the season. Elgin had won just 3 games total in the past 3 years.
“That’s a positive,” said Elgin coach Dr. Nick Bumbales. “We played good defense. That’s four out of five games we’ve give up less than 40 points.”
Maggie Powers and Kristin Tayag added 6 points each for Elgin.
CL South 55, Woodstock North 42: Rachel Rasmussen scored 21 points and Sara Mickow had 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Gators (3-3) outscored Woodstock North 33-20 in the second half to earn a Fox Valley Conference crossover win.
Grayslake North 48, Hampshire 40: Hampshire (0-6) gave undefeated Grayslake North all it could handle before falling in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division season opener. Jen Dumoulin scored 20 points to lead the Whip-Purs.
Westminster Christian 48, Harvard 22: Maddie Versluys scored 10 points and McKaila Hays added 8 as the Warriors (4-2) rolled to a nonconference win. Kinsley Donahue and Liz Meschewski had 5 rebounds each for Westminster, while Claire Speweik and Meschewski had 4 steals each.
Crossroads 62, Elgin Academy 18: Alysson Wittmeyer had 8 points to lead the Hilltoppers (2-3) in a nonconference loss.
Geneva 49, Larkin 19: Quixmia Washington led Larkin (0-5, 0-1) with 8 points in an Upstate Eight River loss.
Grant 48, Dundee-Crown 46: Jordan Bartelt had 17 points and Lauren Lococo added 11 as Dundee-Crown (0-6) fell in nonconference play.
