Hill leads Hersey; Naugton powers Elk Grove winner

Senior Erica Hill just completed an all-area season for Hersey’s girls volleyball team.

The 6-foot forward didn’t waste any time making an impact for her girls basketball team on Tuesday night.

Hill delivered a career-high 19 points with 7 rebounds as the Huskies won their season opener 51-31 over Niles West at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Senior guard Casey Weyhrich also connected for a career-high 16 points with 5 assists while junior Morgan Harris contributed 6 assists and junior Renee Poulos pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

“We looked good for a first game,” said Huskies veteran coach Mary Fendley. “The kids worked hard and our team defense was solid.”

Elk Grove 61, Seton Academy 32: Elk Grove got off to a winning start in the Elk Grove-Lake Park tourney under first-year coach Kathie Swanson as Grenadier seniors Kelly Naughton and Diamond Boyd were among those who each reached double figures.

“I thought Kelly Naughton played really hard,” Swanson said of the Jacksonville State recruit. “She had a lot of steals and really pushed the tempo offensively. She created a lot of shots for her teammates. Her level of effort was outstanding.”

Hoffman Estates 53, North Lawndale 35: Hoffman Estates won its first game in the Elk-Grove Hoffman Estates tourney as Destinee Young (18 points), Becca Stoczynski (14) and Shante Hill (11) all reached double figures.

Fenton 52, Leyden 41: Alondra Chavarria led thee Eagles with 19 points in the season opener. Victoria Galizia chipped in 6 points.

Christian Liberty Acad. 40, Woodlands Academy. 28: Jessica Moriarty scored a game-high 18 points with 4 3-pointers as visiting CLA won its season opener.

Other top scorers for the Chargers were Vivian Barclay (9 points), Megan Sullivan (8) and Shelbi Hernandez (6).
