Woodstock meeting to be held for nature restoration volunteers
Submitted by The Land Conservancy
The Land Conservancy will host a volunteer stewardship orientation for people interested in pitching in at TLC’s volunteer workdays. The orientation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 14, at TLC’s headquarters, 4622 Dean St., Woodstock. The event is free, but registration is required. Call (815) 337-9502.
The morning will include a continental breakfast, followed by an introduction for people who have an interest in becoming a volunteer at one of TLC’s natural areas. Participants will get a general overview about the various work sites, and what is involved in a typical workday. Topics covered will include everything from “How to Identify Invasive Species” to “What Should I Wear?”
People who have an interest in nature and a desire to help improve local natural areas are encouraged to attend. No previous experience is required. A description of the various tasks that need to get done throughout the year, including invasive brush removal, seed collection and controlled burning, will be covered.
There will be work stations on specific aspects of workday activities, including “How to Prepare a Brush Pile for Burning,” and “Herbicide Treatment of Buckthorn Stumps.” The focus will be on proper techniques, safety and hands-on instruction. People of all ages and abilities are welcome.
TLC’s volunteer stewards work alongside natural resource professionals to improve our local ecosystems, viewing each workday as a rewarding experience. In addition, participating in ecological restoration activities provides an opportunity to get outside, enjoy fresh air and exercise, and become part of a community of people working toward a healthier environment.
