Glen Ellyn girl donates children's books as part of bat mitzvah
Instead of asking for presents for her Bat Mitzvah celebration, Emily Friedman of Glen Ellyn decided to help raise money to help purchase books to donate to the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Children's Birthday Project.
The 885 needy children in the Children's Birthday Project, age 3 to 11, receive a 20-pound Birthday Box that includes 4-8 toys, such as several books, small toys, learning activities, and a Party in a Bag, which contains all the supplies, such as birthday cake mix, party decorations, and party favors, so children can celebrate their special day.
Emily earned the money to buy the books by baking desserts and hosting a bake sale for all of her family and friends with the help of her two younger sisters. By hosting the bake sale, Emily was able to purchase two boxes of books from the Scholastic Warehouse and then donated the books to the Children's Birthday Project.
HSP Executive Director and Founder Karole Kettering said, “It is always wonderful to see young people, like Miss Friedman, involved with helping needy children of the same age” A sponsorship for a child is only $54 in the Children's Birthday Project and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program and food at Christmas as well.

About The Humanitarian Service Project
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,616 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
