Joliet hosts senior track stars

For the first time, the 14th annual Senior All-Star Spotlight Meet featuring some of the Midwest’s best boys and girls in high school track and field will be held in Illinois.

Athletes from Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin will compete Saturday at the University of St. Francis in Joliet. The meet will start with the parade of competitors at 9:45 a.m., with competition in the field events starting at 10:15 a.m. and running events starting at 11 a.m.

Some of the boys who are expected to compete include Class 3A triple jump champion A.J. Scarbrough of Barrington, Fremd pole vaulter Nick Bednarek, Palatine 400-meter runner Kendric Cornelius and Lake Park high jumper Kevin Spejcher.

St. Viator golfers hitting it big: Five former golfers from the St. Viator boys program led by Jack Halpin have stayed on course to more success in college. Joe Carlson transferred to San Diego University and played in 29 rounds with a 76.1 average and low of 68 for a team which was ranked 61st overall and made the NCAA regionals.

Matt Vitale is a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility remaining after this season at Butler. He played 23 rounds with a low of 68. Kenny Wienckowski had some Division I interest but chose Illinois Wesleyan, which finished ninth in the Division III tournament. Wienckowski played 25 rounds and averaged 76.3 with a low of 68.

Brad Klune (Boston College) and Dan Stringfellow (Auburn) chose to sit out their sophomore seasons as redshirts and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Danielak gets Summit baseball honor: Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne sophomore Steve Danielak (Hersey) was rewarded for his success as a pitcher and designated hitter as a second-team all-Summit League selection. Danielak became the closer for IPFW and set the single-season school record with 6 saves to go with a 6-2 record.

In Summit play, Danielak was 4-0 with 3 saves and a 2.95 ERA and he hit .342.

LaTulip to play in IBCA All-Star Game: Prospect career scoring leader and three-time Daily Herald All-Area guard Mike LaTulip will play in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Boys All-Star games June 23 at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center in Bloomington.

LaTulip, who is going to Illinois as a preferred walk-on, is on the Class 3A/4A North team.

Duschinsky receives dual honor at SIU: Elk Grove graduate Donny Duschinsky was one of five Southern Illinois baseball players to receive Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete honors. The sophomore was an honorable mention selection with a 3.74 grade-point average and is majoring in accounting.

Duschinsky started all 59 games as SIU came within one victory of reaching the NCAA tournament. He started 36 at shortstop and 23 at third base, hit .264 with 6 homers and 35 RBI and drew a team-high 36 walks.
