Elk Grove clinches share of MSL East

Defending Mid-Suburban East softball champion Elk Grove clinched a tie for first place in the division with a 4-0 shutout at Buffalo Grove.

Senior Andrea Starr (5-0) threw a 4-hitter with 3 strikeouts as the Grens improved to 19-4 and 10-2, four games ahead of Rolling Meadows (6-6) with four to play.

Dani Goranson (3-for-4, double), Devan Parkison (2-for-4, 3 RBI), Krista Soesbe (2-for-4) and Becca Maher (2-for-3) led the Grens offense while freshman Caitlin Catino (2-for-4) paced the Bison (8-18, 4-8).

Fremd 15, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn.): Megan Hubbard tripled while Tracy Welninski, Kristine Herdegen and Sara Untiedt had doubles for the visiting Vikings (23-5, 10-2), who are two games behind Conant (24-2, 12-0) in the MSL West.

Junior Ashlynne Schwantz (11-2) earned the win for Fremd over freshman Charlotte Allan of Hoffman Estates (3-16-1, 1-11).

Prospect 7, Hersey 6 (9 inn.): Second baseman Sarah Scaccia hit the walk-off single to center field to score Meghan Doyle (single to start the inning) in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior Hanna Lythberg pitched 7 innings, allowing 3 hits with 7 strikeouts. Jill Sadowski went two-thirds of an inning and Michelle Korf (2-3) earned the win for the Knights by throwing the top of the ninth and allowing just a walk.

Scaccia, Amy Graham, Ally Schuldt and Julie Mazur each had 2 hits for the host Knights (8-20, 4-8), who scored 5 runs in the second inning including 2-run singles by Cassie Poulos and Jill Sadowski.

Hersey took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh with 5 runs. The big hit was Gina Fasolo’s 2-run double that gave the Huskies (12-13, 4-8) the lead.

Prospect tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Graham.

“It was really nice for us to pick up a win,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair. “There have been so many games where we had the lead and then gave it up. It was so great to see the kids come through and be so excited at the end of the game. Hersey really battled us.”

Rolling Meadows 8, Wheeling 0: Junior Sam Anderson belted her eighth homer of the season as the visiting Mustangs improved to 15-12 and 6-6 in the MSL East. Winning pitcher Sara Brunlieb (12-4) struck out 12 and tossed a 3-hitter.

Other top hitters for Meadows were Sarah Caprio (1-for-4, 2 RBI), Hannah Whidden (2-for-3), Natalie Cannizzo (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and Josie Suchecki (double).

Sophomore Katie Quagliano (4-14) struck out two for Wheeling (4-17, 2-10), which received doubles from Jackie Resnick and Emily Walker.

Schaumburg 8, Palatine 2: Schaumburg senior Renee Kakareka (6-4) struck out 11 and threw a 5-hitter for the host Saxons (12-11, 5-6). She also went 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Courtney Plackner (3-for-4), Alyssa Lancaster (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), Dana Giannelli (1-1, RBI, 3 sacrifice bunts) were other top hitters for Schaumburg while teammates Kirsten Safley and Hannah Kerr each had an RBI.

Junior catcher Lauren Logan (2-for-2) led Palatine (13-14, 5-7) at the plate while pitcher Megan Hedstrom (9-11), Jamie Haze and Grace Rohrwasser each had a hit.

Downers Grove South 6, Leyden 1: Senior Morgan Maize took the loss while Michelle Sansone had a double for Leyden in the West Suburban Gold. DGS (16-9, 5-2) took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring 3 runs on an error.
