Cary-Grove in control of suspended FVC meet

The Fox Valley Conference 800-meter relay record might last a while this time.

Cary-Grove’s Annie McGarrigle, Kathie Wollney, Jenni Maki and Sarah Ryan broke the record Thursday they set last year by almost 3 seconds in a time of 1:42.87.

“I was blown away. I was not expecting that,” Wollney said. “It felt fast.”

The senior foursome ran the event in 1:45.70. They have run the event together in the same order since their freshman year and have won the conference title the last three years.

The Trojans are in good shape to claim their fourth consecutive FVC title. The meet was postponed with five races remaining — one heat of the 1,600 run, two heats of the 200 dash and two heats of the 1,600 relay — because of lightning. Cary-Grove leads with 131 points. Huntley is currently in second with 92 and Crystal Lake Central is third with 78. The meet will resume at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Crystal Lake Central.

“If we can maintain this lead, it’s pretty cool,” Trojans coach Mark Anderson said. “It’s nice to see the hard work of all the girls pay off.”

Wollney also set the FVC record in the 300 hurdles, which was the fourth event she ran in the meet. Wollney won the event in a time 44.79, breaking the record of Huntley’s Amy Fanella (45.29) set in 2009. She also won the 100 hurdles in 15.18, taking advantage of Huntley’s Macy Tramblay hitting the second to last hurdle. Tramblay still finished second in 15.45.

“When I saw (Tramblay) out of the corner of my eye hit that hurdle, I was like, ‘All right, you’ve gotta go,’ ” Wollney said.

Ryan, who also is in the 200 final, won the 100 dash in 12.42 seconds. C-G freshman Olivia Roehri finished first in the discus with a throw of 123-4. McGarrigle, Faith Furio, Maki and Ryan teamed to win the 400 relay in 49.85.

Jacobs senior Allie Virgilio also won two conference titles. She claimed the long jump title with a jump of 16 feet, 2 ½ inches and the triple jump in 36-5. Both distances were at least a foot short of her season bests.

“I thought it being warmer would help, but it didn’t,” Virgilio said. “I think it was the wind and running against it. It seemed like all the girls were going lower then they usually do.”

Jacobs, which is in fourth with 57 points, set a new school record in the 3,200 relay. Elizabeth Barry, Aleta Wurfel, Lauren Van Vierbergen and Kayla Guiliano won the event in 9:45.41. Van Vierbergen won the 800 in 2:19.58.

Huntley’s Omo Tseumah finished first in the high jump at 5-6. The junior tried to break the FVC record at a height of 5-8 ½, but was unable to clear the bar. Crystal Lake South’s Lexi Dahl cleared 11-6 in the pole vault to win the event.
