12 Year Old Boy Donates $54 to Help Needy Child

When Ethan Sebela found out about the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) work with children from needy families, he decided to do whatever it took to sponsor one of them. Sebela, who is in the 6th grade at Hubble Middle School, used his allowance and earned money by doing extra chores around the house until he had $54 – enough to sponsor a child in the Children's Birthday Project. Although he is young, Sebela is a very active humanitarian and has worked on many good-will projects in the past. He has a passion for helping the needy in the community.

The funds will be used for HSP's Children's Birthday Project which provides a child ages 3-11 with a 20 lb. Birthday Box. In the box are 4-8 toys which includes a game or puzzle, activity/learning toy, crafting/art set, or sports equipment and gender specific toys. They also receive 5-7 new books, school supplies, a stuffed animal, mini filler gifts, and a party-in-a-box. The child receives the birthday package the week of their birthday, and provides a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community. A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program and food at Christmas as well.

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,616 children received gifts and 100 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
