Lakes clips Carmel in 8

On a windy day that sent the baseball flying to the tune of 22 total hits, Lakes staged a rally to tie the game and then got a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Carmel 10-9 on Monday in nonconference play.

Lakes got out to a 7-4 lead through two innings, but then Carmel took a 2-run lead by scoring 5 runs over the next two innings. The Eagles answered in the bottom of the fifth when Jake Brown drilled a 2-out, 2-run double to center field to tie the game.

Brown then led off the bottom of the eighth with another double and then got bunted to third. With two outs, Ryan Burnett lifted a pop-up into shallow right field that a Carmel infielder was unable to hang on to and that allowed Brown to score from third.

Reliever Rob Thompson earned the win on the mound for Lakes, which improves to 7-10.

Grant 8, McHenry 4: Winning pitcher Jared Helmich improved to 4-0 on the mound. He went the distance and allowed just 1 earned run while rolling up 8 strikeouts.

Offensively for Grant, Jake Ring went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. He also drove in 2 runs. Jordan Villareal drove in 3 runs and had 2 hits, including a double.
