Conant’s Cavin K’s 19
Conant senior Briana Cavin (8-1) struck out 19 and walked only one while tossing a 5-hitter as the Cougars (9-1, 1-0) posted a 6-2 Mid-Suburban League softball crossover victory over visiting Prospect on Monday.
Cavin also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while her sister Miranda (3-for-4, 3 RBI) belted a home run.
Other top hitters for the defending Mid-Suburban League champs in their conference opener were Sarah Thompson (2-for-3 RBI) and Rachel O’Malley (1-for-2, RBI).
Hanna Lythberg (2-5) struck out seven for the Knights (3-8, 0-1) while going 2-for-3 with 2 doubles.
Michele Molini, Ally Schuldt and Amy Graham had the other hits for Prospect.
Schaumburg 7, Hersey 2: Schaumburg senior left-hander Alyssa Lancaster improved to 3-1 as the host Saxons (6-2, 1-0) were led by Shannon Felde (2-for-3, double), Courtney Raschk (2-for-4, RBI) and Dana Giannelli (2-for-4, double) in the MSL crossover.
Sophomore Angela Schmiederer went 2-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI for Hersey (6-5, 0-1).
Elk Grove 20, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn): Senior Dani Goranson (3-for-3, walk) belted a homer and a double as the visiting Grenadiers (8-2, 1-0) belted 23 hits in five innings in the MSL crossover.
Teammate Krista Soesbe went 5-for-5 with 2 RBI while other top hitters for the Grens were Devan Parkison (4-for-4, double), Megan Keegan (3-for-5, double), Carly Danek (3-for-5), Becca Maher (2-for-4) and Danielle Boffice (2-for-4).
Goranson earned the win with 5 strikeouts in the first three innings while Andrea Starr threw the final two innings.
HeatherNoonan’s single up the middle in the third inning with one out was the only hit for the Hawks (2-6-1, 0-1).
“They’re (Elk Grove) a solid hitting team,” said Hoffman coach Lindsay Hamma. “We gave them some second chances and they did a good job taking advantage of our mistakes. We can’t expect to do that against good teams and come out on top.”
Palatine 9, Buffalo Grove 2: Lauren Logan (2-for-4, 1 run), Kaileigh Moertl (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI, 1 double) and Kayla Borgan (2-for-3, 2 runs) were top hitters for the Pirates who improved to 8-5 and 1-0 with the MSL crossover win. Megan Hedstrom (6-3) threw a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.
Becca Winter (1-for-3, 1 run), Jessie Lazzarra (2-for-3, 1 run) and Dea Barton (2-for-3, 2 RBI, triple) led BG (4-7, 0-1).
Fremd 11, Wheeling 0: Fremd improved to 10-2 and 1-0 as the Vikings were led on offense by Michelle Mazur (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI), Megan Hubbard (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, double) and Leigh Farina (double). Senior Rachel Doering (6-0) got the win over sophomore Katie Quagliano (1-3) of visiting Wheeling (1-4, 0-1) in the MSL crossover.
Maine West 9, Lane Tech 1: Junior Ariel Valles (7-3) struck out 11 as the Warriors improved to 8-6 after the nonconference win in Des Plaines. Caroline Baird hit her second homer of the season while Abbey Herling belted the first homer of her varsity career.
Senior Katie Fitzgerald went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI for West and teammate Hannah Udischas was 2-4 with a run and RBI.
“It was another great offensive and defensive effort,” said Maine West coach Amy Gonzales, who received a hit from every batter in her lineup.
St. Viator 5, Maine South 3: The Lions (4-7) scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a 3-1 deficit in the nonconference game in Park Ridge.
Senior Alex Flasch homered in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1 before the Hawks went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
Lauren Prazuch led off the Lions’ 4-run seventh with a single and was bunted to second by Martha Hayes. Ally Rinka drew a walk and Colleen Dunne loaded the bases with a bunt single. Krystal Harris then slapped to short, which scored Prazuch, and Rinka also came home on an error.
Moments later, Gina Mastrodomenico belted a 2-run double down the third-base line to make it 5-3.
St. Viator sophomore Sam Hogan pitched a complete game with 3 strikeouts.
