Jacobs upsets Leyden
The Jacobs softball team may only be 5-4 on the season, but the Golden Eagles came up with their second win against a top team Saturday.
Jacobs pounded DePaul-bound Morgan Maize for 12 hits and beat No. 5 Leyden 8-1 in the Palatine quad. Jacobs lost to the host Pirates 13-7 in its other game.
“We’ve played our best softball against the upper level teams,” said Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer, whose team also owns a win over No. 10 Barrington this season. “That gives us confidence, especially because we’re still without out best pitcher, Katie Kirker, pitching.”
Kirker, who has been nursing a groin injury, did contribute to Jacobs’ offensive assault on Maize and Leyden, going 2-for5-4 with an RBI. The Golden Eagles scored 5 runs in the first inning, including 3 on a long home run by sophomore Alyssa Lach. Jacquelyne Hengler also went 3-for-5 with a triple, Courtney Coutgno was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kelsey Cummings had a 2-run single.
“We strung some hits together,” Bauer said. “We hit some shots right to people and we hit some into the gaps. Maize didn’t hurt us.”
Sophomore McKayla Lein (2-1) picked up the win for Jacobs, allowing 7 hits.
“McKayla did a great job,” Bauer said. “She was firing strikes and we were defensively solid. McKayla kept them off balance.”
