Wiener’s a winner as Mundelein prevails
Bryan Wiener about did it all.
The senior homered and came within an out of pitching a complete game, leading Mundelein’s baseball team to a 1-0 win over visiting Evanston in a nonconference game Saturday.
The Mustangs improved to 13-2.
Wiener, whose homer came in the fifth, was 2-for-2 at the plate. He struck out 5 Evanston batters.
Each team had 5 hits.
Vernon Hills 10, Fenton 1: MJ Crowley provided a quality start, pitching 5 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and striking out 10.
Tyler Feece finished up on the mound for the Cougars, allowing 1 hit and striking out two.
Vernon Hills fell behind 1-0 in the first, but things changed in the top of the second when Austin Hagen singled and moved to second on an error. With one out, Feece hit a triple to score Hagen. The Cougars took the lead for good when John Foley plated Feece on a groundout.
Vernon Hills broke the game open with five runs in the seventh. Feece (2-for-4, double, triple, 4 RBI) led the way offensively along with Hagen (3-for-4, 3 runs). Foley (1-for-2, 2 RBI), Chris Marras (1-for-4, double, RBI), Crowley (1-for-4, run, RBI), Ethan McGrew (1-for-1, run), Eric Lang (1-for-1, run) and Jake Boyer (1-for-1) all had contributed offensively.
Grayslake North 8, Larkin 5: Adam Gomski went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for the visiting Knights in the nonconference game.
Grayslake North (5-5) also got 2 hits apiece from Nick Carmody (3 RBI), Travis McKenzie and Mitch Kwiatkowski (double).
Kyle LaRoca (2-2) earned the win, pitching 5 innings. Andrew Cantor picked up his second save.
Wauconda 11, Waukegan 5: Trevor Lahrman’s 3-run triple highlighted a 7-run bottom of the first inning for the winners.
Wauconda (6-2) also got triples from Brandon Gibis and Ryan Gick, while Tony Kaminsky was 3-for-4. Lahrman (4 RBI) and Gick each had 2 hits, and Kyle Bock doubled.
Winning pitcher James Holub struck out eight in 4 innings.
Naperville Central 9, Stevenson 2: Adam Walton doubled twice for the Patriots (6-4), who led 1-0 until the visitors scored 5 runs in the top of the fifth.
