Elk Grove, Hoffman Estates win dramatically

Two-out rallies saw Elk Grove lose a lead but win a nonconference baseball game 10-9 over visiting Maine West on Thursday.

The Grenadiers trailed 9-7 with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Cody Schrader cut the deficit to a run when he reached on a fielder’s choice and Jack Czeszewski (3-for-5) delivered a game-winning 2-run single.

Mike Fox was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and Michael Anciulis was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI as Elk Grove led 7-0 after two innings.

But the rout wasn’t on as Maine West scored 3 runs in the third, added one in the fifth and scored 4 two-out runs in the sixth. Ryan Ross and James Duckmann sandwiched RBI singles around Alex Hernandez’s 2-run double.

Cody Gustafson got the relief win for Elk Grove. Crosley Duckmann had 2 RBI and Cory Winiecki threw 3 innings of 1-hit, scoreless relief with 5 strikeouts for Maine West.

Hoffman Estates 3, Naperville Central 2: Riley Mugerditchian’s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Hoffman (6-7) to the nonconference win.

Jimmy Ward (3-1) went the distance with 7 strikeouts and also homered. Zach Hommowun’s leadoff single set up Mugerditchian in the seventh.

Rolling Meadows 3, Glenbard North 0: Eric Lowe threw a 3-hitter and had 3 hits as Rolling Meadows (6-3) won its second game in as many days with a shutout.

Lowe had 5 strikeouts and no walks and threw 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes. John Burkiewicz homered to right field in third and Mike Olson drove in 2 runs with a single and groundout.

Stevenson 2, Fremd 1: An RBI double by Stevenson’s Adam Walton in the top of the seventh ended a seven-game winning streak for Fremd (7-3).

Lee Breitzman got a no-decision as he went 6 innings as he allowed an unearned run. He had 8 strikeouts and threw 71 of his 91 pitches for strikes.

Fremd scored its run in the first when Keith Browning led off with a double and scored on Keith Giagnorio’s sacrifice fly.

Carmel 10, Palatine 8: Palatine (3-10) rallied from a 10-2 deficit with 3-run fifth and sixth innings but left the tying runs on base. Nick Roy drove in 3 runs with a 2-run single and sacrifice fly, Scott Schneberger was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Anthony Fortunato drove in 2 runs.

Jacobs 5, Prospect 3: Neither team scored through five innings but Jacobs won it with a 2-run seventh at Larry Pohlman Field.

Jack Landwehr, Niko Witanen and Brad Gerdes drove in runs in the bottom of the sixth as Prospect (3-7) tied the game at 3-3.

Leyden 4, Glenbard West 3: Angel Sanchez improved to 4-0 and Joey Diaz went 2-for-3 for Leyden (8-2) in the West Suburban crossover.

Glenbrook North 8, Buffalo Grove 1: Billy Chandler’s double was one of only 2 hits for BG (5-8) in the nonconference loss.

Lake Forest Academy 8, Wheeling 4: David Shapiro and Nico Witanen doubled for Wheeling (1-10) in the nonconference loss.

St. Viator 5, Sunny Hills (Cal.) 3: In Wednesday night’s late West Coast game, Brian Wilhite had a 2-run single and Anthony Ferrante had an RBI double in the top of the seventh as St. Viator (7-4) capped a 4-1 California road trip.

Wilhite had 3 hits and Tim McElroy was the winner with 2 innings of scoreless relief.
