Hoffman Estates tops Huntley with late scoring burst
Hoffman Estates was locked up in a tight battle with Huntley going into the bottom of the fifth inning of Saturday’s nonconference baseball game.
That changed quickly as the Hawks erupted for 6 runs on the way to an 8-2 victory over the Daily Herald’s top-ranked team in a game moved to Huntley because of field conditions.
Brian Cvitkovich had a bases-loaded double in the uprising as Hoffman (2-3) erased a 2-1 deficit. Jimmy Ward and Ethan Bloom homered in the game, Mike Gordon had a double and 2 hits and Kevin Grudzinski had 2 hits.
Mark Roberts gave up 9 hits but only 2 runs in 5 innings to get the victory. Grudzinski closed it with 2 perfect innings.
Hersey 4, Addison Trail 1: Hersey had already scored all of its runs by the time it got its only hit on Sean Reszotko’s leadoff double in the fourth.
Mike Danielak and Pat Nix combined on a 2-hitter for Hersey in its season opener. Danielak went 5 innings and allowed both hits and an unearned run with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk as he threw 60 of his 83 pitches for strikes.
An error and passed ball led to Danielak’s sacrifice fly in the second. A 3-run third saw runs score on an error on Trevor Haas’ sacrifice, a balk and Josh Koutnik’s sacrifice fly.
Barrington takes two: Barrington (4-2) continued its early rebound from last season by beating Chatham Glenwood 1-0 and Normal Community 6-4 in a weekend tournament in Normal.
John Rogers threw a complete-game 3-hit shutout in the win over perennial downstate power Glenwood. He had 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Ryan Lidge gave him the only run he needed with a homer which broke up a perfect game in the fifth. Dylan Lidge had Barrington’s other hit.
A late offensive outburst — 2 runs in the sixth and three in the seventh — gave Barrington the win over Normal. Chris Coco was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and Scott Nelson went 2-for-3 with an RBI as Matt Pietrzak got the victory with 3 innings of relief.
Barrington lost 9-4 to downstate Washington on Friday.
Schaumburg 3, Rockford Boylan 2: Evansville recruit Patrick Bellinger (1-1) threw a complete game 5-hitter and gave Schaumburg (2-2) the lead for good with a two-out RBI single in a 2-run fourth. Bellinger had 6 strikeouts and 2 walks and Chris Carlson went 2-for-2 for the Saxons, who took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a wild pitch.
Fremd 2, Naperville Central 1: Jack Andersen had his second straight strong start and Fremd (3-2) won its third straight even though it was outhit 6-3.
Prospect 10, Ft. Myers (Fla.) Cypress Lake South 1: Jack Landwehr earned the win, going 6 innings and allowing just 4 hits. Zach Tuczak had a 3-run homer for Prospect (1-2) as it opened its Florida trip.
Wheaton North 8, St. Viator 5 (8 inn.): A 3-run top of the eighth led Wheaton North all the way back from a 4-0 deficit after an inning in the nonconference game at St. Viator (1-2).
Brian Wilhite had 3 hits and Roy Pettingill had 2 hits and a homer for the Lions. They tied it at 5-5 with a run in the sixth after Wheaton North scored 4 runs in the top of the inning.
WW South 8, Elk Grove 6: A 4-run top of the seventh by Wheaton Warrenville South sent Elk Grove (2-1) to its first loss. Cody Schrader (2 RBI) and Jack Czeszewski had 2 hits and Robby Uehara drove in 2 runs for the Grenadiers, who took a 6-4 lead with a 5-run fifth.
Prairie Ridge 4, Palatine 2: Kurt Becker went 2-for-3 and Dan Riddle had a sixth-inning RBI groundout but Palatine (2-3) missed opportunities in the final two innings at Prairie Ridge.
The Pirates left runners at second and third in the sixth and had two on with two out in the seventh when a pickoff ended the game. Becker gave up 2 earned runs and 7 hits with 3 strikeouts and no walks in 5 innings.
