Brett Wilhelm-led Mundelein nets first win
His dad, Perry Wilhelm, coached Mundelein’s softball team downstate twice during the 1990s.
On Wednesday, Mundelein alumnus Brett Wilhelm earned his first win as a head softball coach.
Erin Kennelly fired a complete-game 3-hitter, and freshmen Maddie Zazas and Maria DeVito each doubled in a 3-run seventh, as Mundelein defeated host Grayslake North 4-1.
Zazas had 2 RBI, while DeVito and Chloe Peterson also knocked in runs. Alex Hemmer was 2-for-4 for the Mustangs (1-3).
Grayslake North, which was playing its first game since losing in a Class 3A sectional final last spring, touched Kennelly for a run in the first inning. Kristina Gandy doubled and scored on Jessica Davis’ base hit.
Kelsey Borders also had a double for the Knights.
Prairie Ridge 8, Wauconda 6: Lexie Redmann homered and Shannon Moorhead doubled twice for the Bulldogs, who led 5-1 before surrendering 6 runs in the bottom of the third.
Lauren Nee also had 2 hits for Wauconda (1-2), which got a double from Maggie LePage, as well.
Glenbrook North 9, Stevenson 6: The Patriots fell to 0-5, despite 2-hit games from Nicole Alesi, Sara Loerch, Lexi Yonkovic and Dana Morgan.
Loerch, Morgan and Ali Castriano doubled for the Patriots.
Vernon Hills 5, Deerfield 4: Jordyn Comitor’s walk-off 2-run double with two out in the bottom of the seventh capped a 3-run rally, lifting the Cougars to their first win.
Comitor, Anya Mollenhauer and Sami Freibrun (double) each had 2 hits for Vernon Hills (1-1). Jenn Claussen earned the win.
