Dramatic wins for Elk Grove, Palatine
Elk Grove was an out away from being shutout by visiting Jacobs in their nonconference baseball game Wednesday afternoon.
But the Grenadiers tied it on sophomore Adam O’Malley’s 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning and improved to 2-0 with a 3-2 victory on Cody Gustafson’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
Jacobs took the lead with a 2-run third off Elk Grove left-hander Jack Czeszewski, who had 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innings. Peter Kinsella started the Elk Grove seventh with a single and Justin Thornton singled with two outs to bring up O’Malley, who delivered the clutch hit to right-center.
Robby Uehara doubled to start the Elk Grove eighth and Kinsella had a two-out infield hit to set up Gustafson’s game-winner. Jake Andrews got the victory with 2 2-3 innings of no-hit relief.
Palatine 2, Cary-Grove 1: It wasn’t easy but Palatine senior Eric Scheuermann (2-0) went the distance to make sure Scott Schneberger’s 2-run homer in the first inning held up in the nonconference win.
The Bradley-bound Scheuermann allowed only 3 hits and an unearned run in the sixth and had 7 strikeouts but pitched around 7 walks. He got out of bases-loaded jams with one out in the seventh and two outs in the sixth and threw 76 of his 119 pitches for strikes for the Pirates (2-2).
Barrington 17, Grant 11: Barrington (2-1) had three players with 4 hits and two with 5 RBI as it won the nonconference game called because of darkness after 5 innings. Justin Gitelis went 4-for-4 with 5 RBI, Aaron Foley went 3-for-5 with a homer and 5 RBI, Frank Waliczek and Max Redpath went 4-for-4 and Macray Poidomani homered for the Broncos.
