Illinois Brass Band Concert to Feature Showpiece For Tuba

Exciting music ranging from Eric Whitacre's lustrous tone poem “Lux Aurumque” to Philip Wilby's acrobatic “Paganini Variations” will be heard when the Illinois Brass Band presents its Spring Concert at 2 P.M. on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Cutting Hall, 250 E. Wood St., Palatine, Illinois.

Also featured will be Philip Sparke's “Concertino for Tuba,” a showpiece for IBB tuba section leader Justin Boller. “The tuba isn't often thought of as a solo instrument but Justin proves it can be as versatile and evocative as any instrument in the band,” says IBB Music Director Stephen Squires. Boller, who lives in Chicago, is a graduate of Warren Township High School in Gurnee and Illinois State University in Normal. He studied tuba with Ed Livingston, former ISU Director of Bands, and David Zerkel, a nationally acclaimed tubist who now teaches at the University of Georgia.

The program will also include Stanley Boddington's “Believe Me If All Those Enduring Young Charms” with Thomas Runty performing as euphonium soloist. Other program highlights include “Fanfare and Flourishes” by James Curnow, “The Florentine March” by Julius Fucik, the traditional Irish air “Be Thou My Vision” arranged for brass band by Marcia La Reau, “The Floral Dance” by Katie Moss, a version of “American Patrol” arranged in the style of Glenn Miller by Scott Richards, and a medley of music from cinema called “Disney Magic” arranged by William Gordon.

“We like to present something for everyone,” says IBB President Bill Kaempfe. “We want our audiences to enjoy hearing our music as much as we enjoy playing it.”

Tickets to the March 25th concert are available at the door and at the Cutting Hall Online Box Office at www.cuttinghall.org/tickets. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children 14 and under.

The Illinois Brass Band performs frequently throughout the Chicago area with other appearances scheduled this year in Hoffman Estates, Huntley, River Grove, Round Lake Beach, and Wilmette. More on the IBB can be found on at illinoisbrassband.org.
