Lake Zurich times NSC road win perfectly
A late start at Zion-Benton failed to faze Lake Zurich's boys basketball team Friday night.
Because the sophomore game went four overtimes, with the host Zee-Bees prevailing, the varsity contest didn't start until 8:30 p.m.
Lake Zurich then took advantage of the absence of Zion-Benton sophomore star Milik Yarbrough, who didn't play. Junior guard Ryan Roach scored 16 points, including four 3-pointers, Mirko Grcic added 11 points and 6 assists, and the Bears won 54-46 in North Suburban Lake Division play.
It was Lake Zurich's first conference road win in four seasons.
Brenden Seeger added 10 points coming off the bench for Lake Zurich (14-10, 4-5), which won its third straight. Jeff O'Brien scored all 13 of his points in the opening half.
Grcic nailed a 3 at the end of the third quarter to put Lake Zurich up 35-32. The Bears then used an 11-2 run, which included a pair of 3-pointers by Roach and one by Seeger, to take a 13-point lead.
The winners made seven 3s.
"We had a balanced attack and showed our depth tonight," Lake Zurich coach Billy Pitcher said. "Zion did a great job pressuring the ball and keeping us out of the lane. Fortunately, we were able to knock down perimeter shots."
Grayslake North 71, Woodstock North 65: The host Knights were led by Danny Mateling, who scored 21 points, and A.J. Fish, who added 18.
The win improved Grayslake North's record to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in the Fox Valley Fox Division.
Grant 49, Antioch 43: Both teams kept the North Suburban Prairie game close.
The score was tied 34-34 at the end of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the fourth to beat the Sequoits.
Allen Lewis led Grant (15-7, 5-4) with 17 points, including 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Sean Wells and Jared Helmich added 10 apiece.
Antioch (4-18, 0-9) was led by Karl Nettgen, who scored 17 points.
Notre Dame 71, Carmel 35: The Corsairs lost the East Suburban Catholic contest to fall to 7-13.
