Leneau leads Warren past Waukegan

Few girls basketball players in Lake County are playing better than Warren senior Lexi Leneau, and she continued her strong play Wednesday night.

Leneau scored a game-high 19 points and dished out 3 assists, as the Blue Devils defeated visiting Waukegan 41-29.

Warren improved to 18-9 with its sixth win in a row. The Blue Devils are 13-2 in their last 15 games.

Waukegan (3-20) was led by 6-foot-2 junior center Syerra Cunningham with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

“I think Syerra has a nice presence around the basket,” Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. “She knows her limitations, she doesn’t try to do what she can’t do, she’s a big body and she takes advantage of it. She puts herself in positions on the floor where she gets good touches. I thought she was the best big on the floor.”

Amanda Barger added 11 points and 5 steals for Warren.

Senior Stephanie Bata got her first varsity start for the Blue Devils and dished out an assist.

“I thought Stephanie played well, and I thought her teammates played well around her,” Stanczykiewicz said.

Lakes 48, Richmond-Burton 39: The Eagles spoiled senior night in Richmond with their school-record 12th win of the season.

“What a great environment — good fans, pep band, cheerleaders,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. “Richmond has some great seniors.”

Loyola-bound Erin Thomas led Richmond-Burton with 12 points, while Alex Callahan and Andrea Fox added 8 apiece.

It was not enough, however, as Lakes’ lone senior, Ashlee Cunningham, controlled the boards with 11 rebounds. Terese McMahon had 14 points and 8 rebounds.

“Terese played a great all-around game tonight,” Schneider said. “Defensively, she was tough.”

Sophomore Heather Hurlbut, starting in place of injured Amanda Smith, added 13 points, and freshman Marisa Merges had 8 points for Lakes (12-13), which trailed 26-21 at halftime and was down nine points in the third quarter.

“We stayed focused and clamped down defensively,” Schneider said. “We held some really great shooters in check tonight.”

Grayslake Central 47, Johnsburg 34: Morgan Dahlstrom scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Rams, who improved to 21-4 and 11-0 in the Fox Valley Fox Division.

Skyler Jessop and Claire Brennan added 10 points apiece for Grayslake Central.

Glenbrook North 54, Grant 47: Morgan Jahnke scored 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Bulldogs, who fell to 7-17 with the nonconference loss.

Libertyville 59, New Trier 41: The Wildcats hit the 20-win mark, as Kerry Risley scored 16 points in the nonconference game.

Alex Haley and Eileen Knauff added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for Libertyville (20-6).
