Basketball MVPs, Week 8
Barrington senior guard Nicole Collins and Libertyville senior guard Griffin Pils have earned the Daily Herald’s basketball MVP award for their recent exploits. It’s the eighth installment of the award this season.
Collins scored 24 and 22 points in Barrington’s two most recent games, both Fillies victories. Pils scored a career-high 40 points — including 19 of 19 at the foul line — in an overtime victory against Carmel.
Girls MVPNicole Collins, Barrington: The 5-foot-6 senior guard lit up the scoreboard in back-to-back wins for the Fillies. Collins scored 22 points in a 53-37 win over St. Charles with 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 assists and then came back with a season-high 24 points (4 3-pointers, 6-of-7 free throws), 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in a 53-50 win over Schaumburg. Collins scored 18 points in the second half against the Saxons.
Girls runners-upRachel Hinchman, Geneva: With Ashley Santos injured, Geneva needed someone to step up. This senior guard did last week, leading the Vikings in scoring in a pair of wins. Hinchman started with 14 points against West Chicago and followed with 16 more against St. Charles East #8212; all in the second half. Hinchman added 5 assists against West Chicago and 6 steals vs. the Saints.
Hannah McGlone, Streamwood: Streamwood#146;s 6-foot sophomore center threw down a career-high 33 points and grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds in a 69-55 win over Larkin, then came back with 14 points and 9 rebounds in a 48-40 loss to St. Charles North.
Kari Moffat, Stevenson: Her drive and drives to the basket have helped elevate the Patriots#146; play lately. The junior guard scored a season-high 18 points in a 44-38 win over Zion-Benton. She then nearly single-handedly led the Patriots past Libertyville, as she had a career-high 22 points, including three 3-pointers, in a 39-36 overtime loss.
Bria Walker, Metea Valley: The Mustangs#146; junior guard played a key role in two wins last week. Walker scored 13 points with 2 steals and 2 assists in a 40-33 win over Lockport. She then poured in 18 points as Metea upset Neuqua Valley 43-42, the Mustangs#146; first win over their District 204 rivals.
Boys MVPGriffin Pils, Libertyville
Sporting a new, short haircut, the 6-foot-4 senior guard stood tall. Shooting an amazing 19 of 19 from the foul line and draining five 3-pointers, he poured in a career-high 40 points in the Wildcats#146; 83-76 overtime win over Carmel. He followed up with 17 points as the Wildcats won again, edging Zion-Benton 59-55.
Boys runners-upDavid Cohn, York: The Dukes#146; junior guard led his team to three wins last week. Cohn earned all-tournament honors at Galesburg with 12 points against the host school and 21 points against Bloomington. Cohn added another 21-point performance against Schaumburg. He averaged 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the three victories.
Mike LaTulip, Prospect: LaTulip quickly closed in on the Prospect career scoring record with a career-high 38 points in a win over Hersey on Saturday and 28 in Tuesday#146;s win at Glenbrook North by shooting 12-for-22 on 3-pointers and 50 percent overall from the field and making all 10 of his free throws. The senior guard also had the game-winning assist Saturday and 7 assists and 6 rebounds Tuesday.
Joey McEachern, Aurora Central: The Chargers#146; 6-foot-2 senior guard notched a career-high 24 points in a 63-60 nonconference win over Kenwood. He made 10 of 17 shot attempts and added 5 steals and 6 rebounds. Four days prior McEachern scored 12 points with 4 steals and 9 rebounds in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover win, 58-48 over Chicago Christian.
Derrick Streety, Larkin: This 5-foot-10 guard played a large part in 2 victories. The sophomore led the Royals with 17 points in a 64-40 victory over Streamwood. Three days later he scored 8 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter #8212; highlighted by a spinning, go-ahead basket #8212; to lift Larkin to a 70-67 upset of previously undefeated Plainfield East, which was then ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.
