Glenbard South goes deep to beat Fenton
With all the 3-pointers Glenbard South hit Wednesday night in Bensenville, it looked very familiar to Fenton coach Tim Anderson.
“That’s what we’ve been doing for years and we like that,” Anderson said. “We didn’t do it, they did. Good for them.”
It wasn’t good for the Bison. Half of the field goals the Raiders made came from behind the arc, nine in all, and Glenbard South rode that 3-point barrage to a 46-37 Metro Suburban Conference victory.
The game started with Raiders sophomore Stefani Bazigos hitting a pair of 3s and scoring the first 8 Glenbard South points as the Raiders (12-8, 6-1) jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter.
The Bison fought back in the second, cutting down on their turnovers to take a 23-20 halftime lead.
“Our shooting in the first half was not very good,” Glenbard South coach Julie Fonda said. “We couldn’t get anything to fall in that basket as far as the short stuff goes. It was a little frustrating for them. Some of them weren’t shooting because they couldn’t get anything, so we talked about it at halftime. The only way to score is to shoot, so you gotta keep going. That’s when Theresa got hot in the third and fourth quarters.”
A pair of Theresa Scheet 3-pointers to open the second half returned the lead to Glenbard South, and the Raiders never gave it back. Scheet hit all four of her 3-pointers in the Raiders’ 17-point third quarter.
“I was shooting a lot in the first, but I was off. Fonda and (assistant coach Brian) Stiles told me to keep shooting and I just started hitting,” Scheet said. “It felt real good.”
Even though the Raiders didn’t score much inside, they did control the action down low, with 6-foot-3 freshman Sydney Bauman collecting 13 rebounds and blocking 8 Fenton shots.
“She did have a really nice night on the boards and blocked shots,” Fonda said. “She’s doing a really nice job of keeping her feet and not jumping and not going forward and just waiting for the ball.”
“We can’t cover everything, and they took advantage of those opportunities,” Anderson added. “They’ve got a nice inside-out game.”
Bazigos hit a couple of second-half 3-pointers to finish with 14 points, and Scheet had 12 points.
Senior Dylin Coons led Fenton (9-13, 2-5) with 19 points and 8 rebounds.
“We struggle with, at times, consistency, and that’s kind of what got us tonight,” Anderson said. “We have a small margin for error in which we can deviate from what we do and when we deviate, it comes back to haunt us.
“We’re moving forward. We’re in a little losing streak, but we are moving forward.”
