Sweet tourney start for Barrington

Barrington kicked off play in the Sweet Sixteen Tournament with a 53-37 victory at St. Charles North on Saturday.

Senior Nicole Collins scored a game-high 22 points with 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists as the Fillies improved to 9-12.

“I thought Nicole played a very complete game,” said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro, whose team faces Schaumburg on Friday.

Junior Maddie Bartz added 15 points and 7 rebounds for the winners while classmate Alexa Resch had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

“Maddie and Alexa were very effective inside,” Barreiro added. “It was a nice bounce back from (a Friday night loss at Mid-Suburban West leader Fremd).”

Elk Grove 42, Lake Forest 34: Diamond Boyd (16 points), Kelly Naughton (8), Melissa Solorio (8) and Amber Lindfors (6) were top scorers for the visiting Grenadiers in the nonconference game.

The Grens (11-8) jumped ahead 12-3 after one quarter and never looked back as Boyd recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and Lindfors grabbed 8.

“We responded well after a tough loss (39-34 to Wheeling) the night before,” said Grens coach Ryan Kirkorsky, whose team travels to Mid-Suburban East leader Rolling Meadows on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Conant 57, Lake Park 55: Senior guard Ashley Bartuch scored a career-high 17 points with a personal-best 4 3-pointers for visiting Conant (6-14) in nonconference play.

Senior Allie Bauch added a career-high 15 points and Natalie Kutrumanes 14.

“Allie did a great job defensively,” said Conant coach Dan Travers. “It was a great team win. The girls were disappointed after (Friday night, a 39-37 loss to Schaumburg) but they wouldn’t quit. They are very resilient. They are getting better and better and I am very proud of them.”

Sophomore Sarah Mazurek (7 points) and Bauch each had a pair of 3-pointers.

“Their size hurt us a little,” Travers said of Lake Park. “But we kept pressuring them and battling. And we hit our shots.”

The Cougars’ 8 3-pointers were a season-high.

Bogan (Chicago) 58, Maine West 32: Senior guard Amanda Hoye was the top scorer for Maine West (7-13) in the first game of the day at tourney director Jim O’Boye’s 22nd annual McDonald’s Shootout at Willowbrook High School.

Sophomore Brittany Collins, who is scoring close to 15 points per game, was held to 5 as the sophomore fouled out with 3:58 left in the third quarter when the Bengals outscored West 22-4.

Sophomore Julia Huinker grabbed 8 rebounds for the Warriors while junior Ashley Collins had 6 and junior Alexia Prosperi 5.
