Rockford Lutheran tops Wauconda
Thomas Kopelman scored a game-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, leading Rockford Lutheran's boys basketball team to an 83-66 win over Wauconda in the championship game of Marengo's holiday tournament Wednesday night.
Rockford Lutheran led 40-35 at halftime and then outscored Wauconda 28-12 in the third quarter.
Matt Mead had 17 points and 5 rebounds for Wauconda (7-7, 3-2), while Kyle Ryan scored 16 points, including four 3s, and dished out 3 assists. Connor Rueb chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds, and Austin Swenson tallied 11 points and 5 assists.
Wauconda 40, Antioch 32: At Marengo, the Bulldogs won the semifinal game, as Kyle Ryan led the way.
Ryan had 12 points (three 3-pointers), 5 steals and 4 assists. Kodey Thomas and Matt Mead added 8 points apiece. Mead also had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Antioch was led by Karl Nettgen's 16 points.
Vernon Hills 60, Deerfield 50: At Wheeling, Stephen Curry scored 20 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed 8 rebounds, and the Cougars outscored the Warriors 21-11 in the fourth quarter to win their consolation-bracket game.
Jarrett Wood added a season-high 17 points, and Trenton Fulton had 10 for Vernon Hills (6-5, 1-1), which was tied with Deerfield 39-39 after three quarters.
Darren Hoveydai chipped in 9 points for Vernon Hills, which will play Loyola Academy at 12:15 p.m. today.
Carmel 67, Maine West 62: At Wheeling, Brandon Motzel poured in a season-high 25 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, and the Corsairs bounced back a day after losing their tournament opener to Naperville Central.
Carmel (4-6, 1-1) also received 15 points from Ian Kristan. Cullen Barr added 8 points and 5 rebounds for the Corsairs, who play Niles North at 2 p.m. today.
Lake Zurich 59, LaSalle-Peru 35: At Pekin, the Bears concluded the day with a victory, as Mirko Grcic scored 14 points.
Doug Murphy and Zach Johnson each scored 8 points for Lake Zurich (9-8, 1-2), which jumped out to a 23-8 lead after one quarter, led 39-17 at halftime and was up 48-29 after three.
Freeport 46, Lake Zurich 41: At Pekin, the Bears failed to protect a 34-29 lead after three quarters and dropped their first game of the day, despite Mirko Grcic's game-high 17 points, including a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, and 5 rebounds.
Doug Murphy had 8 points and 6 rebounds for Lake Zurich, and Jeff O'Brien contributed 7 points.
Luke Norman and Marcus Van Brocklin led the Pretzels with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
