St. Viator wins at Snowflake

The 29th annual Snowflake tourney opened Wednesday night at St. Viator's Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

The four-time defending champion hosts got off to fast start, leading 11-1 after one quarter over Northside College Prep.

In a defensive gem, the Lions prevailed 39-25 to improve their overall record to 8-4.

St. Viator was led by sophomore guard Erin Fabbri (17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals), senior center Lauren Rooney (6 points, 8 rebounds) and senior forward Mallory Hess (5 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds).

“We also got some nice play from Morgan Hess, Jennie Horstmann, Michelle Presslak, and Colleen Dunne,” said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. “We played a solid defensive game that led to the low scoring contest.

“This was a tough game for us and we did a nice job of battling on both ends of the floor.”

In other action, tourney favorite Glenbrook North started out with a 56-19 triumph over Leyden, which was led by junior guard Victoria Galizia's 8 points.

Proviso East 49, Barrington 48: Barrington (5-7) started play on its own floor in the Chicagoland Holiday Classic and lost a heartbreaker.

Demetria Watson hit the game-winning 12-footer in the final seconds to lift Proviso East.

Stacey Welch had 20 points, 6 assists and 5 steals for the Pirates (10-2) while Kalea Parks added 14 points and 8 rebounds.

The Fillies were led by 6-foot junior forward Alexa Resch, who collected 14 points and 13 rebounds.

“It was probably her best game of the season,” said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. “And (5-10 junior forward) Maddie Bartz (12 points) gave us a some good minutes.” Senior guard Nicole Collins handed out 4 assists and sophomore Angie Kirchoff was 6-of-8 at the free throw line for the Fillies, who face Stevenson today at 5:30 p.m. at Niles West High School.

“We did some nice things,” Barreiro said. “We dug ourselves some holes and battled back. Overall, I thought the girls played well. Proviso East is a good team.”

Wheeling 68, Lake Forest 38: Wheeling (2-14) jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one quarter and notched its second win on the penultimate day of action in the Blue Devil Classic at Warren High School.

Senior Kellie Kuzmanic led the Wildcats with 16 points (1 3-pointers) while freshman Hailey Dammeier and senior Leah Malsom each added 10.

Freshman Deanna Kuzmanic chipped in 9 and junior Jessi Zuba 8 for the Wildcats, who conclude the tourney today with a 3 p.m. tip-off against Deerfield.

Palatine 39, Deerfield 27: Junior guard Nia Pappas scored a season-high 22 points with 6 3-pointers as Palatine improved to 9-4 and 2-2 in the Blue Devil Classic at Warren High School.

Junior guard McKenzie Wiedemann added 6 points for the Pirates and senior forward Katelyn Mayer 5.

Palatine wraps up the five-game tourney today at 4:30 p.m. against Lake Forest.
