Sarah McHugh scored 14 points, Kathleen Felicelli added 12, and Carmel Catholic’s girls basketball team defeated Niles North 53-39 in Warren’s Blue Devil Classic on Wednesday night.
Cassidy Kloss had 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Corsairs, who led 17-14 after one quarter, 28-20 at halftime and 41-28 after three.
Carmel (9-5) improved to 3-1 in the tournament. The Corsairs play Warren, which is also 3-1, at 6 p.m. today on the final day of the tourney.
Niles West 45, Stevenson 40: At Barrington, Notre Dame-bound Jewell Loyd scored 23 points to lead the Wolves in the Suburban Holiday Showcase contest.
“Kari Moffat and Olivia Whalen did a great job containing probably the top player in the state,” Patriots coach Tom Dineen said.
Whalen scored 15 points to lead Stevenson (9-4), which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Julia Dabrowski added 10 for the Patriots.
Loyola 47, Lake Zurich 40: At Wheaton St. Francis, Anna Schueler hit three 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the Ramblers (10-2) in the Suburban Holiday Showcase game.
Lake Zurich (8-4), which lost its third in a row, received 12 points from Stephanie Schmid, 9 from Cathryne Spear and 8 from Katherine Anderson.
Loyola used a 15-2 run to erase a 30-25 third quarter deficit. Lake Zurich led 24-21 at halftime.
Woodstock North 47, Lakes 39: At Woodstock, as part of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic, the Thunder bolted to an 18-1 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back.
Lakes (5-8, 2-2 tournament) trailed 31-5 by halftime.
“We had absolutely no energy and showed little hustle or desire tonight,” Eagles coach Pete Schneider said. “We did not play any form of defense in the first half. The lead got to 34 points before we decided to play. In the fourth quarter we went to some younger kids and that led a great comeback.”
Schneider credited Nicole Mogged, Heather Hurlbut, Sam Ney, Shelby Trkla and Dayna Olson for sparking a late rally that saw Lakes outscore Woodstock North 28-5 in the fourth quarter.
Hurlbut led the Eagles with a game-high 13 points, while Ney added 8 points.
Lakes plays at noon today.
Woodstock North was led by Sami Ahr with 13 points and Haylee Nutter with 9 points.
