Red, green and “blue” – fight holiday depression

For most people, the holiday season brings the promise of joy, peace and love. But for many, the season can trigger sadness, stress or even a more serious depression.

“The high expectations of the holidays make us very vulnerable,” said Dr. Jan Remer-Osborn, PhD, neuropsychologist/psychologist and coordinator of clinical programs in behavioral health services at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. “Try not to focus on having the perfect holiday, instead focus on the reason for the season by spending time with family and friends.”

Osborn recommends keeping up with your daily routines. “Get enough sleep, exercise, avoid excess alcohol and call your friends,” she adds. “And remember the holidays are not the time to solve family problems. Set grievances aside and don't feel guilty about it, as others may be just as stressed, too.”

Dr. Osborn emphasizes that awareness is the first step. “It's important to be familiar with the signs and symptoms that may signal depression,” she says. They include:

• Loss of appetite; weight gain or loss

• Irritability, explosive outbursts

• Lack of interest or enjoyment in activities, especially those that once brought pleasure

• Sleeplessness

• Lack of energy

• Poor concentration

• Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness

Not only should you be aware for yourself, but if you see or know someone showing signs of depression, be a supportive friend or recommend they talk to a professional.

“A call to your primary care physician should be the first step in getting the help needed,” she says. If you are feeling desperate and alone, call your doctor immediately or the DuPage County 24-hour crisis line at (630) 627-1700.
