Restitution, community service in St. Charles East prank
Two former St. Charles East High School students have paid restitution for a senior prank at their high school last May, and could have their records cleared of the offense if they complete community service and stay out of trouble, according to court records.
Robert J. Holmes, 19, and William Dula, 18, were arrested on felony charges that they caused more than $300 damage to the school. The felony carried a sentence of anywhere from probation to five years in prison.
Both seniors were 18 at the time and neither had a criminal record.
So far, each has paid $1,215 restitution — splitting the cost of the $2,430 damage to the school’s freshmen locker area and hallways — and entered into Kane County’s Second Chance Program, which provides nonviolent offenders with an opportunity to clear their records without pleading guilty and complete community service.
Holmes, who now lives in Tempe, Ariz., is due in court Jan. 30 to update officials on his progress toward 100 community service hours. Holmes’ defense attorney, Reginald Campbell, could not be reached for comment.
Dula, who lives in Geneva, is due for community service hours review March 5. A message left for his defense attorney, James Haiduk, was not immediately returned.
The pair were accused of writing “Senior,” and “LOLOLOLOL” inside the high school, along with painting interior windows, signs and lockers with black paint, according to court records.
They were arrested in school the day after the incident.
School officials said it took 48 bottles of graffiti remover, 15 gallons of paint and a total of 50 hours to clean up damage to the school’s Dunham Wing.
