Northwest roundup/ Hoffman wins Yanule’s debut

Hoffman Estates made sure to give Luke Yanule a memorable start to his boys basketball coaching career at the school.

Senior Austin Terry hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with about 2½ minutes to play and the Hawks went on to a 58-53 victory over McHenry on Monday night at the Crystal Lake Central tournament.

“I thought we played extremely hard,” said Yanule, who did get a victory when he filled in for a game at Schaumburg in the 2007-08 season. “For the most part everything we did in practice transferred over and that was good. I’m extremely proud of the effort.”

Terry and Alex Bonds led the way offensively but Yanule said the Hawks got solid play off the bench from senior Sammy Wilks and juniors Takuro Azumaya and Connor Schwarz.

“We went 10 deep and there weren’t any dips or lulls,” Yanule said.

Schaumburg 55, St. Joseph 49: Junior Jimmy Lundquist scored a career-high 24 points and hit six 3s as Schaumburg didn’t need the extra time this time to come back and beat St. Joseph in the opener of the Ron Johnson Tournament at St. Charles East.

Mike Mallet scored 11 points and Kyle Bolger added 10 as the Saxons rallied from a 35-32 deficit after three quarters. Last year they rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Chargers 52-51 in overtime in the season opener.

Barrington 57, Lakes 48: Junior guard Brad Zaumseil has had no season-opening jitters in the last two Mundelein tournaments. Zaumseil scored a career-high 21 points to lead Barrington and surpass his previous best of 19 in his first game last season.

Mark Bennett scored 12 points and junior Scott Nelson added 10 as the Broncos used an 18-7 second quarter to take a 30-20 halftime lead.

Elk Grove 58, Fenton 30: Elk Grove junior Austin Amann nearly matched Fenton’s scoring himself with a career-high 27 points and two 3s in the 26th annual Chuck Mitchell Tournament in Bensenville.

Senior Anthony Jimenez added 11 points for the Grenadiers, who led 28-19 at halftime and put away the game with a 14-4 third quarter.

“We would like to be a little more balanced,” said Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman. “But if one guys steps up like Austin did in our first game, we’ll take it.

“We made some good adjustments in the second half defensively to hold them to 4 and 7 points in each quarter.”

In the other game, Fremd lost to Lake Park 50-47.

Maine West 61, Antioch 39: Conor Hart and Kevin Garcia started slowly and so did Maine West as it trailed by 5 points after a quarter in the Warrior Classic game at Libertyville.

Garcia got rolling with 8 of his 17 points and both of his 3s in the second quarter and Hart scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half for the Warriors. They led 27-23 at halftime and 39-29 after three as Dylan Carson added 9 points and Tom Kukec scored 7 points.

Lake Zurich 56, Palatine 33: Palatine was outscored 27-11 in the second half of its Ed Molitor Classic opener. Tom Hauert had 9 points and Josh Baldus added 8 points for the Pirates.

Mirko Grcic scored 25 points to lead Lake Zurich.

Lake Forest 48, Hersey 28: Sean Reszotko scored 9 points and hit two 3s as the Huskies fell behind 25-13 at halftime in their opener in the Billy Schnurr Tournament at Niles West. In other games, Niles West beat Kelly 67-47 and Glenbrook North beat Hales Franciscan 53-43.
