South Elgin edges St. Edward

All three games were close between the South Elgin Storm and the St. Edward Green Wave girls volleyball teams, but the Storm had the upper hand on Monday night.

The Storm (11-17-1) defeated the Green Wave (17-13) 2 games to 1 at South Elgin High School in a nonconference matchup. The Green Wave came out strong in Game 1 with an early 5-0 run and even though the Storm got back to within 3 points, St. Edward’s Sarah Norman got the game-winning kill to give the GreenWave the 25-21 Game 1 victory.

In Game 2, it was the Storm getting off to a good start with its own 5-0 run early, thanks in part to 2 kills in a row by Alison Osborne. The Green Wave would catch up with a 3-0 run late, but the Storm held on to win 25-20.

“As aggressive as we played in the first game, I think we just really let down in the second,” said St. Edward head coach Jaime Dovichi. “We let them gain some momentum, and they just took it and went with it and we weren’t able to rebound after that. (The Green Wave) had their confidence high and then they lost it.”

Game 3 had a strong start for the Storm again, this time with a 7-0 run early in the game capped off by a block kill by Osborne and Sam Kummerer. Once again the Green Wave would catch up late, but couldn’t quite finish it off and Amanda Nadler sealed the 25-22 victory with the game-winning kill. South Elgin coach Joni Plach was glad to get a rare win in a Monday night game.

“We’ve never won on a Senior Night,” said Plach. “Monday games for us are never any good, but we were in (the Elgin) tournament on Saturday and we came out of that on a really high note (with a 3-2 record and second place overall); and we were hoping to bring that right into tonight’s match.”

Nadler led the Storm with 7 kills, while Kummerer put down 5. Maggie Jakaitis had a team-high 22 assists on the night, and Osborne notched 6 kills, 5 digs, and 4 block-assists.

Katie Swanson led the Green Wave with 16 kills while also notching 8 digs. Mallory Gross, who was playing for the injured Katie Ayello (broken fingers), put up 27 assists and had 6 digs. Allison Kruk had a team-high 27 digs for St. Edward.

Harvest Christian d. Alden-Hebron: Sydney Doby had 9 kills and 4 blocks and Erica Manusos added 8 kills, 5 aces and 3 digs to lead the Lions to another win. Kali Cramer added 4 kills, 7 aces and 11 assists for Harvest while Katelyn Floyd had 11 assists and Shayna Manusos 4 digs.
