Jedryka, BG relays rewrite record book
It was a record-setting night at Buffalo Grove — especially for junior Veronika Jedryka, but she also had a lot of company.
The two-time state qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle is excelling at the shorter freestyle distances this season, which was very apparent Thursday as Elk Grove paid a visit to the Bison’s pool in a Mid-Suburban East dual.
Buffalo Grove won 109-74.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Jedryka erased both the pool and schools records by finishing in 52.71. Barrington’s Emily Fogle held the pool record (53.60, ’08) and Sara Warner had the school record (54.22, ’02).
Jedryka had the leadoff leg of BG’s 200 free relay, which also broke the pool and school records. Jedryka, junior Margaret Lotzer, junior Callie Fasching and senior Sara Fasching won in 1:40.77, smashing the former pool mark of 1:43.13 and the school record of 1:42.29.
Jedryka’s 50 split on the relay was 24.41, which bettered the pool record held by Palatine’s Alison Wimer (24.66, ’95) and the team record held by Warner (24.98, ’01).
And finally, in the 400 free relay, new records were established by the same BG quartet. They broke their own school record set last year and erased the pool record set just a couple of weeks ago by Hersey by winning in 3:42.62.
Elk Grove’s Simona Kurta won the 200 IM (2:22.22) and the 100 fly (1:02.82), and the Grens got a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke from Jackie Hirschauer, Monica Chojnacka and Kristi Harris.
Sara Fasching was a double individual winner for the Bison (50 free, 100 back), and Jedryka won the 200 free (1:59.60) in addition to her effort in the 100 free.
Prospect d. Meadows: Jessica Cavaiani won the 100 free (57.06) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.78) and had legs on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays to help the visiting Knights pick up an MSL East victory.
Rolling Meadows senior Vicky Vockeroth won the 50 free in a season-best 25.81 and also won the 100 fly (1:02.77).
Meadows’ Carly Lawrence was tops in the 100 back (1:10.02), and the Mustangs won the 400 free relay in 4:07.54 with Vockeroth, Angela D’Astice, Maggie Feikes and Jessica Dykstra.
Prospect’s individual winners included Dana Liva in diving, Megan Tuttle (500 free), Amanda Drucker (200 free) and Kallie Shields (200 IM).
“My girls raced really well,” said Meadows coach Monika Chiappetta, who was pleased to see Vockeroth’s improvement. “She’s been out of her mind with really good practices, but that’s when she can keep an eye on the clock the whole way. Last week we had a breakthrough with that, and it showed up today. She came up to me today and said, ‘OK, I’m back again.’ ”
Hersey d. Wheeling: Amanda Petro took top honors in the 200 IM (2:14.91) and 100 free (54.57) and also had legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays as visiting Hersey earned a 137-48 victory.
Wheeling earned a 1-2 finish in the 50 free with Leah Malsom (25.95) and Theresa Godlewski (26.02), and Godlewski edged Hersey’s Karolina Szymaszek to win the 500 free.
Hannah Bovino paced a 1-2-3 sweep of diving for Hersey with 180.10; the Huskies did likewise in the 100 breaststroke with Stefanie Kintzle on top in 1:15.08, and in the 100 backstroke with Erin Horne winning in 1:04.77.
Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: The host Pirates had double individual winners in Nicole Theis (50 free, 100 breaststroke), Laura Mayer (100 fly, 100 back) and Amy Zahn (200 IM, 400 free) to go with two relay victories in a 101-73 MSL West victory.
The Pirates’ Nicole Huffman won the 200 free and finished second in the 100 fly.
Hoffman Estates’ Sharon Sturnfield led teammates Vera Damaris and Cory Liang in a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free.
