COD gets $1.8m grant from ICCB for adult education and family literacy

The Illinois Community College Board has awarded College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn a $1,821,534 grant to support FY 2012 adult education and family literacy programming.

The Adult Education/ESL program at College of DuPage is the largest literacy provider in District 502 and is the largest provider outside of the collective City Colleges of Chicago.

“The index of need for literacy services in District 502 is among the highest in Illinois,” said Joe Cassidy, COD dean, Continuing Education/Extended Learning. “A full 20 percent of District 502 residents currently reside in households in which English is not the primary language.”

College of DuPage expects to serve 4,300 students this year, Cassidy said. The FY 2012 program plan projects 25,570 separate units of instruction for support services such as counseling and advising, assessment and testing, childcare, reading and writing assistance, tutoring, and the integration of assistive and adaptive equipment.

The ICCB grant specifically covers seven distinct instructional areas, including Adult ESL; ESL Family Literacy: Adult Basic Education/Reading; English; Math; GED Preparation in English and Spanish; Citizenship; and ESL for Citizenship.

In addition, 14 community partnerships assist with this programming: Bensenville School District 2, Elmhurst School District 205, Indian Prairie School District 204 (Naperville); Marquardt School District 15 (Glendale Heights); Naperville Community Unit School District 203;

Queen Bee School District 16 (Glendale Heights); School District 45 (Villa Park); West Chicago Elementary School District 33; the Bensenville, Villa Park and West Chicago public libraries; People's Resource Center (Wheaton); People's Resource Center - Southeast (Westmont); and the Woodridge Community Pantry.
