District 211, Mount Prospect honor 9/11 victims

Local remembrances of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks continued to multiply on Friday as Sunday’s anniversary neared.

Palatine High School paid tribute to past and present U.S. patriots before its varsity football game against Wheeling at Chic Anderson Stadium on Friday night.

Alongside a ceremony that included a moment of silence and recognition of Palatine residents who lost their lives serving their community, students and staff erected a 14-foot by 290-foot Patriot Day Tribute Wall featuring more than 600 banners they’d made. It will be on public display through the weekend.

At Conant High School more than 100 veterans and members of the local police and fire departments were recognized Friday during the halftime portion of the school’s varsity football game.

And at the Mount Prospect fire department, personnel will spend the weekend wearing special commemorative T-shirts.

The idea, suggested by firefighters Local 4119, was approved by Chief John Malcolm. “We wanted to do something special,” he said.

A list of many other local tributes occurring today and Sunday is in the Neighbor section and at dailyherald.com.
