Barrington wins tournament No. 2

The Barrington boys golf team won seven tournaments in 2010, and the program hasn’t slowed down a bit this year.

The Broncos captured their second tourney title already this young season by winning Monday’s Biltmore Classic in North Barrington.

Barrington’s team score of 308 was 4 strokes better than second-place St. Viator, with Broncos junior Greg Conrad taking medalist honors.

Conrad fired a blistering 72 on a perfect late summer day for golf at the pastoral setting of Biltmore Country Club, a difficult course and a facility that is a great supporter of prep golf.

“I guess I’m getting used to this course,” said Conrad, a three-year varsity golfer who is a member at Inverness Country Club, but says he’s played “quite a bit” at Biltmore.

Conrad shot 78 and 79 his first two years at the tourney and stepped up to a new level this year.

“I made some key putts to save some pars early,” added the junior, “and that got me going.”

Conrad’s teammate Taylor Ganzer, a senior, carded a 74 to finish second individually, while JP Talbot (79) and Mike Ross (83) made big contributions to the win.

“Our goals are to win as many tournaments as we can this year, and qualify for the state tournament,” said Ganzer, a three-sport star who plays basketball for the Broncos and also came into his own last season as a star setter on the volleyball team.

“We lost our No. 1 and No. 2 players from last year (to graduation), but we’ve got a very talented team again this season. Any time we play, we look forward to doing our best.”

Luke DeTrempe (76) and Robert Renner (77) of St. Viator won the the third- and fourth-place medals, respectively, while Garrett Danelz of Barrington’s second team, Prairie Ridge junior Drew Witt, and Matt Haussmann of Hersey all shot 78’s to tie for fifth individually and take home medals.

Barrington’s Team 2 finished third with a 328, while Hersey fired a 332 as Grant Manno pitched in with an 81.

Pat Schuetz (79) of St. Viator, Lions teammate Sam Masini (80) and James Perrone of Crystal Lake Central all took home medals.

Adam Milano fired an 83 to excel for Geneva, while Barrington golfers Michael Stathakis (84) and Nick Schippel (84) rounded out the outstanding day of Barrington team 1.

“We’re blessed with a lot of great players who have really stepped up this year,” said Conrad. “This season’s going to be fun.”
