Naperville North students suspended in alcohol probe
More than 20 Naperville North High School seniors were questioned and an undisclosed number were suspended and may face additional disciplinary action after appearing to be intoxicated upon arriving for their first day of classes Wednesday, a Naperville Unit District 203 spokeswoman said.
Susan Rice said a student tipped off a dean that some students may have consumed alcohol Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning in an off-campus setting.
“The dean investigated the situation and talked to one student and that led to a number of other students being talked to,” Rice said Thursday. “During that process it came to light that several students were involved in an overnight party situation where alcohol was consumed.”
North administrators met with some of the students and their parents on Thursday. The incident violates both the student and student athlete codes of conduct, Rice said.
She declined to comment on any specific case but said the typical sanctions in such a scenario include a 10-day suspension that may trimmed to five days if the student agrees to participate in a substance abuse program.
Athletes, if found to be in violation of the code, could be banned from participation in their sport for one-quarter of their season.
A mandatory meeting long had been scheduled for Thursday evening for all students participating in fall athletics or activities and at least one parent per student. The session was designed to address a variety of topics, including team communication, academic expectations, health and training, good game behavior, the co-curricular code, bullying/hazing and other topics.
