Prospect measures up at Guilford Invitational

Prospect’s girls golf team showed it can play with the best teams in the state on Thursday at the Rockford Guilford Invitational.

The Knights (333) took second place in the 15-team event behind champion Loyola (327) at the par-72 Rockford Country Club, which plays about 5,700 yards.

“It’s a very tough course,” said Knights coach Jim Hamann. “It’s a private country club and taken care of very well.”

Defending state champion Stephanie Miller of Stevenson negotiated the course in 74 strokes, winning the individual crown by 1 stroke over Callie Nelson of New Trier (75).

Prospect senior Christine Garmoe led the Knights charge with a sixth-place finish (80) while teammates Allison Walsh and Noreeen Caporusso (83) tied for ninth.

Kiley Walsh and Sarah Scaccia each recorded 87s to complete the Knights’ scoring.

Four of the top five teams in the 2010 state meet participated — defending champ New Trier, third-place finisher Hinsdale Central, fourth-place Prospect and fifth-place Loyola.

“It’s just fun and an honor being invited to play with so many strong programs,” Hamann said.

Just two days ago, the Knights defeated Loyola 308-317 when they posted a school record.

“It’s been an extremely busy week,” Haman added. “I’m very proud of the effort from the whole program.”

Garmoe shot a 43 on the front nine and came back with 37 on the back.

“The course was in immaculate condition,” Hamann added. “They double cut and rolled the greens so in the morning they were lightning fast.

“I thought our girls did a much better job putting on back nine. They adjusted on the back nine very well.”

This was Prospect’s first year in the invite.

“We had a strong showing with some of the best teams in the state to cap a very good week,” Hamann said. “We tip our cap to Loyola for playing great.

“We know all these teams will be in the mix in the postseason so this was a good confidence builder to finish ahead of these strong programs.

“After playing four straight days, I know Tim (Caspar, assistant) and I and the girls are looking forward to practicing. We haven’t had a chance to do that in a while. These girls work very hard in practice and are real fun to coach.”

St. Viator 173, Hersey 192: Sophomore Dana Gattone of St. Viator earned medalist honors on the par-35 Rob Roy Golf Course in Prospect Heights while teammate Amy Stringfellow chipped in a 43.

Senior Nikki Gierman led Hersey with a 42.

Fremd 176, Mundelein 202: Junior Angie Kim earned medalist honors for Fremd at the par-37 Countryside Golf Club in Mundelein. Dorothy Feng added a 44 for the Vikings while teammates Madison Zyer and Christina Kim recorded 46s.
