Rotary Club of Darien Donates $1,500 to Help Impoverished Senior Citizens in Humanitarian Service Project's Program

The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) located in Carol Stream received a $1,500 donation from the Rotary Club of Darien to help their Senior Citizen Project. HSP was one of 30 local organizations to receive a donation from the club.

The Rotary Club of Darien raised the money from their major fundraiser. The fundraiser was an auction held earlier this year that went into their Grant-in-Aid program. The Grant-in-Aid money was then split between local charities and organizations with donations being anywhere from $500 to $1,500.

The Rotary Club of Darien has been supporting various programs of HSP since 2001 and in addition to helping the senior's program, the club has also sponsored a child in the Children's Birthday Project.

The Rotary Club of Darien has been around since 1974 and their main objective is service. The Rotary Clubs motto is “Service Above Self” and support programs that help youth, education and develop service projects that help hunger, poverty and children at risk according to their website.

“The Darien Rotary Club raises money every year to support local and International non-profit organizations which make a positive difference in our world,” said Frank Burns. “We have supported HSP for several years because they support needy residents right here in our Darien community.”

The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizens Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries that include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishable foods, personal care items and paper products, in addition to fresh fruits and vegetables. The seniors also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift and Holiday Meal provided by HSP's volunteers.

About The Humanitarian Service Project:

HSP has been given the highest Four Star rating by Charity Navigator for the sixth consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering Project, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce during the summer months. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive that benefited a total of 5,200 children by giving supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair and directly to schools and individual children.
