Softball/Lake County roundup
Wauconda 3, Grayslake Central 2: At Grayslake North, Alex Kinnamon’s single in the bottom of the 10th scored a sliding Cara Nance from second base, giving the second-seeded Bulldogs a walk-off win and berth in today’s 11 a.m. Class 3A regional final against top-seeded Grayslake North.
With one out in the 10th, Nance (4-for-5) hit her second double of the game. She had homered earlier, as well. Kinnamon’s RBI hit made her 3-for-5.
Nance also sparkled defensively at third base, throwing out a batter on a bunt down the third-base line.
No. 3 Grayslake Central wasted several scoring chances, particularly in extra innings.
“We flirted with disaster a few times,” said Wauconda coach Tim Rennels, whose Bulldogs improved to 11-18.
Grayslake Central had forced extra innings by scoring an unearned run off Wauconda starter and winner Brittany Ehmann in the top of the seventh.
For the Rams, Caitlin Flary was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Stacy McAfee went 2-for-4.
Mundelein 6, Buffalo Grove 1: At Mundelein, Alex Hemmer belted 2 solo homers and walked twice, Hillary Bunnelle scattered 5 hits, and the 10th-seeded Mustangs ousted the eighth-seeded Bison.
Mundelein will host top-seeded Fremd at 10 a.m. today in a Class 4A regional final.
Bunnelle struck out three and walked two.
