College of DuPage to Hold Tulip Bulb Giveaway on May 27
College of DuPage will hold a free tulip bulb giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 27, in the northwest corner of the Fawell E parking lot, which is located west of Lambert Road on campus in Glen Ellyn.
Nearly 10,000 bulbs will be given away in a variety of colors – red, yellow, pink, purple and violet. People are asked to bring their own bags and will be limited to 20 bulbs per person.
“The bulbs are from the College's flower beds,” said Chris Kornsey, manager of Building and Grounds at College of DuPage. “Every two years, we replace the bulbs, which is fairly common practice on large campuses, whether corporate or educational.”
According to the College of DuPage Horticulture program, the bulbs should be stored in a cool, dry place that allows for air circulation, such as in an onion bag that's placed in a basement or garage.
Bulbs should be planted in mid- to late October about two to three inches deep. In addition, after they bloom in the spring and the foliage has died, the bulbs should be dug up and stored again until fall planting.
