Cary-Grove’s Freeman on the mark

Josh Freeman picked the right time of the year to come up with a pair of school records.

The Cary-Grove junior thrower claimed the shot put with a toss of 56 feet, 2 inches and won the discus with a heave of 171-4.

Freeman’s efforts helped the Trojans post a third-place finish In Friday’s Fox Valley Conference meet at Prairie Ridge with 72 points.

“The wind really helped me in the discus and I like throwing in the open field at PR,” said Freeman. “I had good quickness in the shot and good explosion. I am right where I want to be going into the sectionals next week.

The Trojans also got a pair of first-place efforts from Anthony Golowach. The senior won the high jump with a jump of 6-3 and the 400 in 49.37.

Crystal Lake Central claimed conference team honors with 92 points, edging Grayslake Central (91) by a point.

The Rams had a pair of double winners. Jahard Nelson set conference records while winning the 100 (10.85) and the 200 (21.75).

“It was a great night,” said Nelson. “I got good starts in both races and I am ready for the sectionals next week.”

Grayslake Central junior Luke Zygmunt won the 3,200 (9:26.06) and the 1,600 (4:26.76) while Bryant Jennings won the triple jump (43-9 ½). The Rams also won the 400 relay (43.33) and 800 relay (1:29.15).

Dundee-Crown, led by first-place finishes from hurdler Max Kittle, placed fifth with a score of 51 points.

Kittle won the 110 high hurdles with a clocking of 14.79 and the 300 high hurdles with a time of 39.17.

“This was a great double,” said an ecstatic Kittle. “It is a tough double. I really ran strong in both races and closed well.”

The Chargers also got a first-place effort from Adrian Asani in the long jump with a leap of 22-4.

Crystal Lake South was sixth with a score of 42 points. The Gators won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:05.70. The winning foursome consisted of Matt Biederwolf, John Sullivan, David Lenzini and Brian Roesslein.

The bottom of the standings had Prairie Ridge (seventh, 37), Woodstock (eighth, 37), Huntley (ninth, 34), Jacobs (10th, 23), Grayslake North (11th, 10), Woodstock North (12th, 7) and Johnsburg (13th, 0 points).
