Elk Grove clinches share of MSL East crown

Elk Grove’s softball team clinched a tie for first in the Mid-Suburban League East Division on Monday as junior Dani Goranson blanked host Buffalo Grove 4-0 on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts.

The Grenadiers improved to 22-3 and 11-1 in the MSL East, 4 games ahead of Rolling Meadows (15-11, 7-5) with four to play.

Devan Parkison (2-for-4), Goranson (2-for-3) and Kristen Cetkovic (2-for-4, double) led the Elk Grove offense.

The Grens scored 3 runs in the first inning, taking advatage of 2 errors and RBI singles by Cetkovic and Goranson.

Amanda Salzman, Emily Begnel and KC Dunne had the hits for the Bison (10-12, 3-8).

Fremd 3, Hoffman 1: Host Fremd (20-2-1, 10-1) scored all 3 runs in the first inning for junior Rachel Doering (10-1), who struck out eight while tossing a 2-hitter in the 75-minute contest.

Caitlin Patenaude, Megan Hubbard (double) and Michelle Mazur had Fremd’s RBI.

Junior Alex Tuminaro belted a home run for Hoffman (5-17-1, 2-8) in the top of the seventh.

Palatine 9, Schaumburg 2: Host Palatine (19-6, 7-4) outhit the host Saxons 13-8, led by Katie Mnichowicz (2-for-4, 2 RBI singles), Joanne Jablonski (2-for-4, 2 triples), Lauren Logan (2-for-2, 2 RBI singles), Megan Hedstrom (2-for-3, double) and Kaileigh Moertl (2-for-3, RBI).

Lefty Dani Boisvert (15-5) struck out two while throwing a 7-hitter to improve to 15-5.

The Saxons (11-8, 5-6) were led on offense by Brianne Lingl (2-for-4, triple, double), pitcher Alyssa Lancaster (1-for-3, RBI) and Amber McCoy (1-for-2, RBI).

Hersey 14, Prospect 7: Junior Alex Tinaglia went 4-for 5 with 2 RBI for host Hersey (7-14, 4-7), as sophomore Sarah Platt (2-8) picked up the win.

Haley Henriksen (3-5, 2 doubles) and Platt (3-for-5) also helped spark the Huskies.

It was Hersey’s second straight MSL East win, coming on the heels of junior Morgan Palmer’s fourth victory of the season when she struck out six against Wheeling.

Prospect (4-20, 1-11) was led on offense by Nikki Surico (3-for-5), Nicole Naranjo (2-for-5), Hanna Lythberg (2-for-5), Cassie Poulos (3-for-4, double) and Amy Graham (2-for-4, double).

Rolling Meadows 16, Wheeling 6 (6 innings): Senior catcher Kelly Keyzer belted a homer and a double while going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI for host Rolling Meadows (15-11, 7-5) under the lights. Other top hitters for Meadows were Sam Anderson (3-for-4, triple, 4 RBI), Josie Suchecki (4-for-5, double), Natalie Cannizzo (2-for-4) and Emily Skorin (2-for-5, 3 RBI). Senior Kayla Mueller (2-2) earned the win.

Sophomore Sara Kern went 2-for-4 with a double for Wheeling (5-13, 0-10).

In the Wildcats’ 18-4 win of the second game of a doubleheader at Lake Forest on Saturday, Kern had 2 triples in one inning, and 3 for the game. According to the IHSA records books, the 2 triples in one inning is a state record. The 3 triples in one game is a record for a Mid-Suburban League player, according to the record book. The previous record was 2, set by Barrington’s Christine Pederson (1996) and Michelle Moss (2002).

Kern is hitting over. 400 for the season, leading the team in every offensive category.

Leyden 3, Hinsdale South 1: Sophomore Morgan Maize threw a 4-hitter and belted a 3-run homer while going 2-for-3 for Leyden. Amanda Moran also went 2-for-3 for the Eagles, who are 18-5 and 5-2 in the West Suburban Gold. Maize (17-3) struck out nine and walked four.
