Cary-Grove’s Sutherland notches No. 450

John Spoelstra threw a complete-game 3-hitter and Matt Panek went 2-for-3 with a home run and 4 RBI to lift Cary-Grove to a 5-1 victory over District 155 rival Prairie Ridge in Crystal Lake Wednesday.

The victory was the 450th in the 24-year career of Cary-Grove coach Don Sutherland (450-339-11).

“It was easy to win the way Spoelstra pitched,” Sutherland said. “We’ve had a lot of good pitching like that here through the years, which is what allows you to win games.”

Spoelstra (3-1) allowed 1 earned run, struck out 9 and walked 3. Michael Vilardo went 2-for-4 with a double for Cary-Grove (9-4, 6-1).

Huntley 11, McHenry 10: The Red Raiders scored twice in the sixth inning to tie this Fox Valley Conference road battle and they pushed the winning run across in the top of the seventh to win their seventh straight. Craig Klein (3-0) earned the win by pitching 2 innings of scoreless relief against at McHenry offense that had previously collected 10 runs on 11 hits.

Carlos Alvarez (2-for-3, 2B, RBI), Colin Lyman (3-for-4, 3 runs), Bryce Only (HR, 2 RBI), Nick Bralich (3 RBI) and Justin Gundlach (4-for-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense for Huntley (11-1, 7-0). McHenry slipped to 6-7, 5-2.

St. Charles East 10, Elgin 1: Lee Jackson, Adrian Martinez and Jordan Smith each had 2 hits, but that was all the offense Elgin (2-7-1, 2-4-1) could muster in a road loss in the Upstate Eight Conference. D.J. Riggio took the loss for the Maroons.

Lisle 2, St. Edward 1: Ryan DiCristofano doubled and drove in a run, but the Lions finally pushed the go-ahead run across the plate in the top of the ninth inning to win a nonconference meeting in Elgin. Austin Davis (1-2) took the loss for the Green Wave (3-13)
