Boys water polo / Northwest roundup

Wheeling 15, Hersey 7: The Wildcats maintained their MSL East lead behind 3 goals from Clark Jensen and 2 apiece from Ethan Rosengarden, Dan Kubeck and Ben Reiff. Wheeling improved to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in East Division play.

Keven Pedersen and Tom Cotey both had 3 goals for Hersey (1-11, 1-5).

Schaumburg 8, Fremd 7: Credit Alex Koehl for this win — even though he didn’t play.

With the game at Fremd tied with just over 6 seconds left, Schaumburg called a timeout. As Saxons coach Tom Gallagher started to come up with a play, Koehl said he had a play he knew would work.

Gallagher stepped aside, and Koehl explained the play.

When the game resumed, it worked perfectly and led to the decisive goal on a sweep shot from Brandon Luke.

“I’ve never had a non-player decide a game before,” said Gallagher. “It was pretty neat.”

Randy Carr and Luke finished with 2 goals apiece for Schaumburg (14-7, 4-2), and Andre Degla led all scorers with 4 for Fremd (5-9, 2-4).

Palatine 18, Barrington 9: The Pirates kept a firm hold on first place in the MSL West as Dylan Weissmann (6 goals) and Kamil Mulawa (5) accounted for the bulk of Palatine’s scoring.

Dan Sommerfield had 12 saves for Palatine (14-1, 6-0), and Chris Hoover had 10 for Barrington (4-13, 0-6).

St. Viator 13, Lake Forest 9: Peter Cleary, Justin Imhoff and Gregg O’Connor came up with 4 goals each to help the visiting Lions pick up a nonconference win.
